Have you ever had someone teaching you something and at some point you came to realize that you actually know more about the subject than they do? Generally you feel a little bit embarrassed for them and a little bit proud of yourself.
That is not exactly what the Psalmist is referring to here, but it is similar.
I have more insight than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, Because I have observed Your precepts. Psalm 119:99-100
I don’t really read this as bragging, at least not for his own part. He’s simply saying that he’s received teaching from the ultimate teacher and wisdom from the one who is older than all the aged.
As Christians, we sometimes come across people that teach things or champion causes that are contrary to what the Bible teaches. These may be individuals that we respect and even look up to. Teachers, authority figures, parents, and so on. That can make it very difficult to accept the truth of the Bible.
Yet, when we stop and consider that the Bible was penned by God himself, thousands of years ago, and remains as true today as it was when it was written, then you start seeing things from the right perspective. The Holy Spirit was here before the land and sea and stars and sky. He will be here long after all our teachers and authority figures have gone to the grave. He guides you in His infinite wisdom and everlasting love.
When you hear something being taught and you know it is counter to what the Bible teaches, have the conviction to believe in the Bible. Not because you are smarter or superior to the one teaching. But because you have access to a greater teacher.
