Non-Christians often have this perception of Christianity that it subdues followers through harsh laws and strict regulations. Even as a young believer I feared what I had to “give up” in order to be a “real Christian.” As it turns out, there is much more freedom in Christ than there is without him.
So I will keep Your law continually, Forever and ever. And I will walk at liberty, For I seek Your precepts. – Psalm 119:44-45
Sin is a slave master. There’s no sugar coating it. Romans teaches us that without Christ, we are slaves to sin and there is no hope of denying it’s power over us. When we accept Christ and follow where he leads, the shackles fall off and we are set free from the bondage that ensnares us. We still stumble and fall sometimes, but we at least have the freedom to choose not to fall.
God doesn’t want lemmings or robots. He wants us to follow after him of our own free will. He gives us his Law to steer us from sin and to point us in the right direction. Namely back to Christ. I have so much more freedom in Christ than I ever did without him.
