Don’t Procrastinate

Proverbs 10:5

He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.

I’m no farmer, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but it would seem like the ideal time to harvest is during the Fall.  Yet the Lord says the son that gathers in the Summer is wise.  Isn’t that jumping the gun a bit?  Perhaps.  But maybe the idea here is that picking early is better than late.  Or perhaps there is something to do with gathering that is good preparation for the actual harvest.  Like I said, I’m no farmer, but I think the general message here is to not procrastinate.  Or “never put off for tomorrow what you can do today.”

The second half of the verse is much more straightforward.  Don’t sleep during the harvest.  Don’t slack off when people are counting on you.  Don’t let golden opportunities pass you by.   This includes opportunities to witness to your friends and share your faith with your co-workers if the situation presents itself.
