I will listen to what God the LORD will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints– but let them not return to folly.
The nation of Israel, God’s people, had a habit of falling back into the same sins over and over again. God sent prophets to warn the people of their folly and call them back to the Lord. I think that is a good analogy to our lives. We tend to fall into the same ruts that have plagued us in the past, despite knowing full well how they have hurt us in the past. This is true folly and a result of our sinful nature.
Thankfully the Lord has given us a better prophet in the Holy Spirit, who dwells within every believer. He reminds us of our folly and directs us back to the Lord when we listen to his instruction and take heed. The beautiful thing here is that he keeps his promises of peace to us as well.
I think that the Lord is a “lamp unto my feet” because he wants us to focus on the road right at our feet and not worry too much about the road over the horizon. Stray too far off the path the Lord has set for you and you’ll find the going harder than you would like. Stay on the straight and narrow and see how the Lord blesses you with peace.
