This verse is about perspective:
A man’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way? – Proverbs 20:24
I read this and think about a painting by Monet. The Lord is the artist and our life is his canvas. We see each brush stroke. Sometimes the colors are vibrant, sometimes they are dull. They sometimes make sense to us, but only in a limited way. You see, it is as if we are staring at the canvas from an inch or two away. We can only see the brush strokes right in front of us. Over time we move around the canvas and sometimes it starts to come together for us, but we never get the full picture.
The Lord, on the other hand, sees the whole masterpiece. He has the perspective of seeing the painting from a few steps back. The brush strokes that seem to us to be conflicting and jumbled up together are a brilliant landscape to him. He even has a greater perspective of putting our canvas together with the rest of the world. He fits us into His plan and promises us that all things work together for the greater good.
